Beginners think the secret to staying warm is wearing the thickest, heaviest coat they own. Experts know better.
The secret is Layering. Instead of one giant coat, you wear three specific thin layers. This traps heat better and allows you to adjust if you get too hot.
Here is the 3-part system every camper must know.
1. The Base Layer: "Moisture Management"
This is the layer that touches your skin. Its ONLY job is to move sweat away from your body.
- Material: Merino Wool or Synthetic (Polyester).
- NEVER Wear: Cotton! (We explain why in our Cotton Kills Guide).
2. The Mid Layer: "Insulation"
This is the layer that traps your body heat. It acts like a furnace.
- Best Options: A fleece sweater or a puffy down jacket.
- Tip: If you are hiking and sweating, take this layer off to avoid overheating.
3. The Shell Layer: "Weather Protection"
The outer layer defends you against wind and rain. It doesn't need to be warm; it needs to be waterproof and windproof.
Pro Tip: A good layering system allows you to sleep warmer too. Combine this with a high R-Value sleeping pad for the ultimate winter setup.
