DIY Camp Lantern: How to Turn Your Water Bottle into a Lamp

Headlamps are great for seeing where you walk. But when you are sitting around the table playing cards, a focused beam of light is annoying. It blinds everyone.

You need a lantern. But if you forgot to pack one, don't worry. You can build one in 5 seconds using items you already have.

The "Jug Light" Trick

This is the oldest trick in the book, and it works like magic.

1. Take a clear or semi-transparent water bottle (or a milky white gallon jug).
2. Fill it with water.
3. Strap your headlamp around the bottle, with the light facing INWARD (into the water).

Why it Works

The water diffuses the harsh beam of the LED. Instead of a spotlight, the entire bottle glows with a soft, ambient light. It lights up the whole tent or table without blinding anyone.
